Red Devils defeat Eagles 38-27 at home

Published on Sunday, February 7, 2010 2:13 PM MST

Behind an effective zone defense, the Glendive girls basketball team held Sidney in check for the first three quarters. The Eagles showed heart and resilience in the fourth, but the Red Devils wrapped up the 38-27 home conference victory Thursday night.

Trailing 28-12 going into the fourth quarter, the Eagles came out eager to cut into the Red Devils’ lead. Jordan Sullivan added a three-point play and a turn-around jumper while Janae Moore made a bucket inside to get Sidney within 12 points. Moore made a nice move to add two points down low to make the score 31-21 in favor of the Devils.

With just three minutes left, the Eagles continued to push ahead. A pair of free throws by Sullivan got Sidney the closest it had been since the first quarter at eight points. The Devils, however, didn’t let the Eagles get any closer. A Katie Turner free throw and a Sadie Sampson lay-in helped Glendive hold on to the 38-27 victory.

A Sullivan lay-in got Sidney within 10, but buckets by Ashley Skillestad and Blair Milne gave the Devils an 18-point advantage. Free throws by Thiel and Johnson made the score 24-7 going into the half in favor of Glendive.

The Eagles stepped up the defense in the third quarter by holding the Red Devils to just four in the period. A Thiel three late in the period made the score 28-12 going into the fourth quarter.
