It is hard to believe 2009 is almost over. It seems like it just began a few weeks ago. But even so, looking back much has happened through the year.

We’ve had bizarre weather with 20 below degree temperatures early in the year to spring storms that flooded much of Sidney. There have been festivals and the county fair as well as sports tournaments. We were even paid a visit by the BBC.

For me, I’m especially grateful this year because when I put things into perspective, I find I have more than I thought I did. So in light of the Thanksgiving holiday I decided I would share the top 10 things I’m thankful for.

1. My faith and my friend Jesus Christ. Although I’m in the middle of nowhere, I’m never alone.

2. My family who has continued to support me.

3. My friends. Life is so much better with them. Am I right?

4. My church family who has taken me in and befriended me.

5. My health.

6. My apartment. I’m glad I still have a place to live when there are other Americans out there who have lost their homes.

7. My job and the experience I continue to gain.

8. My car. Let’s face it. Life is so much more difficult without it, especially out here.

9. All of the interesting subjects I’ve learned about from moving to a rural community. Agriculture and oil specifically. But also the lessons learned from small town life (people have your back here).

10. Not to sound too cheesy, but I’d have to say Sidney and Richland County. I still say it’s the perfect place to begin a career (and not just in journalism). I really can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Now that I’ve listed my top 10 (and believe me, there’s more), I urge everyone to really think about what they’re grateful for. And hopefully, even as life throws some massive curveballs, things will be put into perspective for you as well.
